What is HIPAA?

HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. HIPAA is a piece of United States legislation that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information.

HIPAA compliance states that your health care information is confidential and cannot be shared with others.
An example would be the following:
You call in sick to work, your employer cannot ask what you are sick with and they cannot disclose your illness to others, even if you tell them.  They are not allowed to give out any health care information without your permission.
Email/Chat HIPAA compliance means that companies have taken measures to make sure that their emails are safe and secure.
